What is a Birth Doula?
Doula: "Woman servant"
Birth doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a pregnant person and their partner before, during, and after childbirth. doulas are non-medical professionals, instead we focus entirely on the comfort, well-being, and empowerment of the birthing person!
Here are some key roles of a birth doula!
Continuous Support: While hospital staff (nurses, doctors) rotate shifts and care for multiple patients, a doula provides, one-on-one, consistent presence from early or active labor until after the baby is born.
Physical Comfort Measures: Doulas are skilled in pain-management techniques, including massage, counter-pressure, breathing techniques, and guiding the laboring person into different positions to help labor progress.
Emotional Reassurance: We provide continuous encouragement, and a calming presence to reduce anxiety and fear.
Information and Advocacy: Doulas help families prepare by discussing birth options and assisting in the creation of a birth plan. During labor, we help ensure the parent’s voice is heard by the medical team, encouraging communication to help them make informed, confident decisions!
Partner Support: A doula does not replace a partner or family member! Instead we support them, giving them tools to help you, and ensure they can rest or take breaks.
Benefits of having a Doula!
Studies have shown that having a doula present is associated with improved outcomes, including:
28% less likely to give birth by cesarean section.
31% less likely to use synthetic oxytocin (pitocin) to speed up labor.
9% less likely to use pain medication.
34% less likely to rate their birth experience as negative.
DOULAS ARE NOT MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS!!
